Supporting schools to protect pupil and staff privacy when sharing images online
ImageGuard is a free tool to upload existing public website images, remove identifiable faces, and review the result before replacing the published version where appropriate.
A quick process to improve your safeguarding.
Unfortunately, recent developments in AI mean pupil and staff photos on public websites are increasingly susceptible to serious safeguarding risks around deepfaking, impersonation and exploitation.
Following a recent Guardian report that the National Crime Agency is recommending schools remove identifiable images from their websites, the team behind ImageGuard recognised the challenge this presents for schools.
Schools want to celebrate their young people, their work and their communities. ImageGuard is intended as a practical compromise that may help reduce individual risk while preserving the dignity, context and spirit of the original images.
How it works
- Upload your public-facing images
- Images are anonymised within 24 hours using AI-generated alternatives
- Review and replace your original images
- Continue sharing images whilst protecting privacy

How images are handled
Images are processed temporarily for the purpose of anonymisation, in line with GDPR principles including data minimisation, purpose limitation and storage limitation.
Uploaded images are not stored by ImageGuard and are not used by any service to train models. Temporary logs may be kept for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, troubleshooting and support, then destroyed.
Please only use images that are already published on public-facing channels you are responsible for, and review every output before replacing the original.
